Target Information
cGMP-dependent protein kinase 1 is a serine/threonine protein kinase that serves as a crucial mediator of the nitric oxide (NO)/cGMP signaling pathway. When activated by GMP binding, PRKG1 phosphorylates serine and threonine residues on various cellular proteins. Many protein targets for PRKG1 phosphorylation are involved in modulating cellular calcium levels, though the influence of each target can vary significantly across different cell types. In the mouse brain, PRKG1 plays a vital role in regulating sleep and wake patterns. Research has shown that mice lacking PRKG1 experience notable alterations in their sleep-wake cycles, such as reduced rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, diminished consolidation of non-REM sleep, and more fragmented sleep patterns. Additionally, these mice exhibit increased daytime activity and decreased nighttime sleep, highlighting PRKG1's essential role in circadian rhythms and sleep quality.
