Target Information
Nuclear factor of activated T-cells, cytoplasmic 1 (NFATC1) is crucial for the inducible expression of cytokine genes in T-cells, particularly in initiating the transcription of IL-2 and IL-4 genes. It also governs gene expression in embryonic cardiac cells. NFATC1 influences not only the activation and proliferation but also the differentiation and programmed cell death of T-lymphocytes, as well as both lymphoid and non-lymphoid cells. In mouse studies, varying levels of NFATC1 expression significantly affect the immune system. For instance, in the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, elevated NFATC1 expression reduces disease severity. This reduction is linked to increased IL-10 and IL-17 expression, the accumulation of regulatory T cells (Treg), and decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines.
