Target Information

Meteorin plays a significant role in both glial cell differentiation and the formation of axonal networks during neurogenesis. It facilitates the differentiation of astrocytes and converts cerebellar astrocytes into radial glial cells. Additionally, Meteorin induces axonal extension in small and intermediate neurons of sensory ganglia by activating nearby satellite glia. In mice, Meteorin and its analogs are involved in crucial functions, including neurodevelopment, immune regulation, metabolic regulation, cardioprotection, and embryonic development. In the mouse brain, Meteorin is essential for neurodevelopment, promoting the differentiation of astrocytes into radial glial cells, which in turn affects neuronal migration and axon extension. For instance, in the mouse cerebellum, the absence of Meteorin results in most GFAP+ astrocytes retaining a fibrous morphology. In contrast, when Meteorin is present, these cells take on an elongated oval shape and show an upregulation of radial glial markers such as brain adiponectin-B.
