Target Information

The alpha subunit of Mucin-1 possesses cell adhesive properties and can function as both an adhesion and anti-adhesion protein. It may offer a protective layer on epithelial cells against bacterial and enzyme attacks. The beta subunit contains a C-terminal domain involved in cell signaling through phosphorylations and protein-protein interactions. MUC1 is a transmembrane glycoprotein overexpressed in various cancers and is highly expressed in over 90% of human breast cancers. Research has demonstrated that MUC1 plays a significant role in mouse breast cancer models. For instance, in C3H/HeOuJ mice, immunization with a MUC1 fusion protein containing ten repeat sequences significantly reduced the incidence of breast cancer. In the DSS-induced mouse colitis model, the expression of MUC1 and MUC2 was inhibited, highlighting their importance in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Additionally, MUC1 is involved in regulating tight junctions and apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells, thereby influencing the onset of inflammation.
