Target Information
Type XII collagen in mice plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of bones, cartilage, tendons, and other connective tissues. It is particularly significant in the process of bone formation, where it influences osteoblast function by regulating their polarity, organization, and intercellular communication. Mice deficient in Type XII collagen exhibit skeletal developmental defects, such as shortened bones, decreased bone density, and reduced deposition of bone matrix proteins. Additionally, mutations in the COL12A1 gene can lead to conditions like muscular dystrophy and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, characterized by muscle weakness, joint instability, and skeletal abnormalities.
