Target Information
LEI is a member of the serine protease inhibitor superfamily, functioning primarily to inhibit neutrophil elastase (NE). This inhibition allows LEI to play a crucial role in various pathophysiological conditions by reducing inflammatory responses. For instance, in a mouse model of lymphedema, local inhibition of elastase, including NE, helps prevent the degradation of EMILIN1, thereby improving lymphatic function and alleviating lymphedema symptoms. Additionally, LEI exhibits significant anti-inflammatory effects in infectious diseases. In vitamin D receptor knockout mice, increased LEI expression helps mitigate the persistence and severity of chlamydia infections. Furthermore, during lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced NETosis, the absence or inhibition of LEI can heighten the release and activity of NE, resulting in a more severe inflammatory response.
