Target Information

Xeroderma Pigmentosum, Complementation Group C (XPC) is integral to global genome nucleotide excision repair (GG-NER), serving as a damage-sensing and DNA-binding factor within the XPC complex. While XPC alone exhibits low DNA repair activity, this is enhanced by RAD23B and RAD23A. XPC preferentially binds to DNA containing short single-stranded segments rather than to damaged oligonucleotides. In mice, XPC is primarily involved in global genome nucleotide excision repair (GGR), a critical mechanism for eliminating DNA damage. Loss of the XPC gene in mice results in heightened sensitivity to UVB radiation and a significantly increased risk of skin cancer. XPC is also crucial for cell survival; for instance, its absence in bone marrow cells leads to reduced cell survival and activation of apoptotic pathways.
