Target Information
IgM plays a crucial role in the early immune response in mice. It directly binds to pathogens, neutralizing their activity and triggering the activation of the complement system, which serves as the body's first line of defense. IgM also facilitates the differentiation and maturation of B cells, particularly aiding the development of B-1 cells, which are essential for the innate immune response. In mice lacking IgM, B cell development is disrupted, resulting in an increased number of B-1 cells and an imbalance among B cell subsets. Furthermore, IgM enhances the production of T cell-dependent antibodies, such as IgG2a and IgG3, by binding to antigens and promoting antigen presentation, a process that is especially important in the immune response to T cell-independent antigens in mice.
