Target Information

Due to hemolysis, hemoglobin tends to accumulate in the kidneys and is excreted in the urine. Haptoglobin captures and binds free plasma hemoglobin, facilitating hepatic recycling of heme iron and preventing kidney damage. Additionally, haptoglobin acts as an antioxidant with antibacterial properties and plays a role in modulating various aspects of the acute phase response. Hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes are quickly cleared by the CD163 scavenger receptor on macrophages, specifically on liver Kupffer cells, through an endocytic lysosomal degradation pathway. In mice, haptoglobin functions include antioxidation, iron recovery, inflammation regulation, organ protection, cardiovascular disease risk reduction, and involvement in tumorigenesis. In a mouse liver cancer model, haptoglobin reduces tumor occurrence by inhibiting inflammatory responses and oxidative stress. The expression level of haptoglobin is closely linked to the development and progression of chronic inflammation-related diseases.
