Target Information
The fibrinogen alpha chain is cleaved by the protease thrombin to produce monomers that, in conjunction with fibrinogen beta (FGB) and fibrinogen gamma (FGG), polymerize to create an insoluble fibrin matrix. Fibrin plays a crucial role in hemostasis as a primary component of blood clots. Fibrinogen is essential in both hemostasis and thrombosis, promoting platelet aggregation and adhesion by binding to integrin αIIbβ3 on the platelet surface, which results in the formation of a stable hemostatic plug. Studies have demonstrated that mice lacking fibrinogen are unable to form normal thrombi, leading to bleeding events.
