Target Information

Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is a matrix metalloproteinase crucial for the local proteolysis of the extracellular matrix and leukocyte migration. It may also contribute to osteoclastic bone resorption. MMP-9 is pivotal in the onset and progression of various diseases, including inflammation, tumor development, angiogenesis, tissue remodeling, and neural damage. In an atherosclerosis model, the lack of MMP-9 significantly reduced inflammation in the aorta and enhanced macrophage phagocytic ability and collagen deposition. In a stroke model, MMP-9 expression gradually increased post-stroke and was linked to infarct size. Inhibiting MMP-9 can reduce the infarct size following a stroke, indicating its role in promoting neural damage after such an event.
