Target Information

Glutamate receptor ionotropic, NMDA 2A is a subunit of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors (NMDARs), which form heterotetrameric, ligand-gated cation channels characterized by high calcium permeability and a voltage-dependent block by Mg2+. NMDARs are integral to synaptic plasticity, contributing to the slow phase of excitatory postsynaptic current, long-term synaptic potentiation, and the processes of learning and memory. The Grin2a gene encodes the NR2A subunit of the NMDA receptor, playing a critical role in neurodevelopment in mice. Research indicates that the absence of Grin2a results in delayed electrophysiological maturation of parvalbumin (PV) cells in the hippocampus, impacting the formation and function of synaptic networks. Additionally, Grin2a mutant mice exhibit epileptiform activity, potentially linked to abnormal synaptic transmission, and are used as a model for studying schizophrenia, as their phenotype resembles the GRIN2A gene variants found in human schizophrenia patients.
