Target Information
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I keratin family, which comprises intermediate filament proteins. In mice, the Krt14 gene encodes Keratin 14. Its nonhelical tail domain plays a crucial role in facilitating the self-organization of KRT5-KRT14 filaments into large bundles, thereby improving the mechanical resilience of keratin intermediate filaments in vitro. In mouse models, the function of KRT14 can be studied by knockout or transgenic techniques. For example, by knocking out the KRT14 gene, its role in skin barrier function and disease can be studied.
