Target Information

Ubiquitin-like protein ATG12 is integral to the formation of autophagy vesicles. It conjugates with ATG5 through a ubiquitin-like system, requiring ATG7 as an E1-like activating enzyme and ATG10 as an E2-like conjugating enzyme, to function effectively. In mouse models, the absence of ATG12 results in various physiological and pathological outcomes. For instance, ATG12-deficient mice display neurodegenerative alterations, such as neuronal dysfunction and motor impairments, closely linked to the impairment of autophagy. Additionally, the lack of ATG12 leads to reduced tumor cell proliferation, possibly due to decreased mitochondrial biogenesis and disrupted cellular energy metabolism.
