Target Information
Crystallins are the primary structural components of the vertebrate eye lens. In the mouse eye lens, γS-crystallin plays a crucial role in regulating fiber cell maturation and actin organization. This protein is a highly conserved and abundant component in lens fiber cells, vital for maintaining the optical transparency and structural integrity of the lens. In mice lacking γS-crystallin (Crygs knockout mice), no obvious lens opacity is observed, but focusing defects and decreased optical performance indicate that its effect on lens optical quality arises mainly from intracellular defects rather than direct structural changes in the lens.
