Target Information
Fibroblast growth factor 12 (FGF12) plays a critical role in the development and function of the nervous system. It enhances neuronal excitability by increasing the voltage dependence of the fast inactivation of the neuronal sodium channel SCN8A. In mice, FGF12 serves several key functions, including regulation of hair growth, maintenance of hearing and balance in the inner ear, and contribution to nervous system development. The FGF12 gene is crucial for hair growth in mice. Experiments using siRNA technology to reduce FGF12 expression levels demonstrated a significant decrease in hair weight, a reduction in the number of hair follicles, and shortened hair length, underscoring the essential role of FGF12 in maintaining normal hair growth.
