Target Information
Cathepsin L is a thiol protease essential for the comprehensive degradation of proteins within lysosomes. It contributes to the solubilization of cross-linked TG/thyroglobulin and aids in the release of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) through limited proteolysis of TG/thyroglobulin in the thyroid follicle lumen. In mice, Cathepsin L is crucial for the degradation of MHC class II molecules and plays a significant role in the selective activation of CD4 T cells, particularly in the thymus. Conversely, its function in other antigen-presenting cells, such as macrophages, is more restricted and may be competitively regulated by other proteases, including CatS.
