Target Information
C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is a signaling molecule secreted by endothelial cells that plays a critical role in regulating vasodilation and maintaining blood pressure. It does so by activating guanylate cyclase B (GC-B), leading to the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). In mice, CNP significantly affects coronary vascular reactivity, with its absence resulting in reduced coronary vasodilation. Additionally, CNP is crucial in regulating cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis through the NPR-C receptor, which operates independently of guanylate cyclase. CNP is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system, where it is vital for neuronal development and the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Research has shown that mice lacking CNP (gbCNP−/−) exhibit decreased motor coordination, increased anxiety behavior, and are prone to epileptic seizures in old age.
