Target Information

In mice, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) plays a crucial role in the cardiovascular system, kidney function, and blood pressure regulation. ANP, a hormone secreted by atrial cells, operates by binding to the A-type natriuretic peptide receptor (NPR-A). Mice lacking NPR-A exhibit significant myocardial hypertrophy, whereas those overexpressing ANP show reduced heart volume, underscoring ANP's vital role in maintaining heart health. Additionally, ANP possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. Research indicates that ANP can reduce inflammatory reactions and enhance apoptosis, offering protection in pathological conditions such as acute pancreatitis. Beyond the cardiovascular system, ANP also influences other tissues; for instance, it can inhibit ovarian function and has vasodilatory effects in the lungs.
