It is not itself involved in platelet activation and aggregation in the event of a wound, but its precursor, thromboxane A2, is. Thromboxane A2 synthesis is targeted by the drug aspirin, which inhibits the COX-1 enzyme responsible for producing thromboxane A2 in platelets. Bovine gastric mucosal microsomes synthesize prostaglandins from arachidonic acid but thromboxane B2 is the principal product.
