Target Information

Alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase FTO is an RNA demethylase that facilitates the oxidative demethylation of various RNA types, including mRNAs, tRNAs, and snRNAs, serving as a regulator of fat mass, adipogenesis, and energy homeostasis. It specifically removes methyl groups from N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA, the most common internal modification found in messenger RNA (mRNA) in higher eukaryotes. The α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase encoded by the FTO (fat mass and obesity-associated) gene has diverse functions in mice, particularly in regulating adipogenesis and lipid content. FTO is highly expressed in the hypothalamus and significantly influences food intake and energy balance. A deficiency in FTO results in growth retardation, weight loss, and reduced bone mineral density in mice, highlighting its critical role in mouse growth and development.
