Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (ORM1) functions as a transport protein in the blood stream. It binds various ligands in the interior of its beta-barrel domain. It appears to function in modulating the activity of the immune system during the acute-phase reaction. Research has shown that bovine alpha-1 acid glycoprotein can reduce the chemotaxis of bovine monocytes and modulate CD18 expression.
