Target Information
Mouse Arginase-1 (Arg1) is a key enzyme involved in the urea cycle, primarily expressed in the liver, where it catalyzes the conversion of L-arginine to L-ornithine and urea. This process is essential for nitrogen metabolism and detoxification. Arg1 is also expressed in macrophages, where it plays a role in immune regulation, particularly in the context of alternative activation (M2 macrophages). In these cells, Arg1 competes with nitric oxide synthase (NOS) for L-arginine, leading to reduced nitric oxide production and an anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally, Arg1 has been implicated in various physiological processes, including wound healing, tissue regeneration, and immune defense against pathogens. Abnormal expression of Arg1 has been associated with conditions such as argininosuccinic aciduria and certain cancers.
