Target Information
Chicken Thiosulfate Sulfurtransferase (TST) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in sulfur metabolism and cyanide detoxification. TST, also known as rhodanese, catalyzes the transfer of sulfur from thiosulfate to cyanide, forming thiocyanate, which is a less toxic compound. This enzyme is widely distributed in various tissues, with the highest expression and activity observed in the liver, followed by the heart and gizzard. TST is essential for maintaining cellular sulfur homeostasis and protecting tissues from the toxic effects of cyanide, which can be released from certain plants commonly consumed by chickens. Additionally, TST contributes to the production of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a molecule involved in various physiological processes, including redox signaling and mitochondrial function.
