Target Information
Bovine complement C3 (C3) is a central component of the Bovine immune system, playing a pivotal role in the complement cascade, a key part of both the innate and adaptive immune responses. This protein is essential for eliciting the complement response, which is critical in the clearance of pathogens and immune complexes. C3 consists of two polypeptide chains held together by a disulfide bridge and contains an internal thioester that, when activated, mediates the covalent attachment of C3b to immune complexes and invading microorganisms, thereby opsonizing the target. The activation of C3 can lead to the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC), which can directly destroy pathogens. In veterinary medicine, understanding the function of C3 is vital for developing strategies to combat infections and for the management of diseases that involve dysregulation of the complement system.
