Mouse Prenylcysteine Oxidase 1 (PCYOX1) is a flavin-dependent peroxisomal enzyme that cleaves the thioether bond of prenylcysteines, releasing isoprenoid aldehydes and cysteine. It is expressed in liver, kidney, and brain, where it salvages isoprenoid units from degraded prenylated proteins and regulates the cellular isoprenoid pool. PCYOX1 activity influences protein prenylation, cholesterol metabolism, and oxidative stress responses. As the only known mammalian prenylcysteine oxidase, PCYOX1 is an important target for studies of isoprenoid metabolism, peroxisomal function, and metabolic disorders.
