Target Information
Ponazuril is the active metabolite of the anticoccidial drug toltrazuril. Both are triazine-based drugs used in veterinary medicine, particularly to treat and prevent coccidiosis in poultry, rabbits, and other livestock, and for protozoal infections like Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) in horses. The food safety concern arises because residues of ponazuril can accumulate in the edible tissues of treated food-producing animals.
