Target Information

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is highly relevant to the safety of animal-derived foods. It is the most common and toxic of a family of mycotoxins produced by Fusarium fungi, which frequently contaminate corn and other grains used in animal feed. When animals consume this contaminated feed, they can suffer from a variety of severe health problems. For example, FB1 is known to cause a fatal neurological disorder in horses and a life-threatening condition called pulmonary edema in pigs. While FB1 doesn't transfer into meat, milk, or eggs in significant amounts, its presence in the feed supply poses a direct threat to the health of food-producing animals and is therefore a major concern for food safety and agricultural economics.
