Target Information
The sodium/glucose cotransporter 1 is an electrogenic Na+-coupled sugar symporter that actively transports D-glucose or D-galactose across the plasma membrane, with a Na+ to sugar coupling ratio of 2:1. Its activity is driven by the transmembrane Na+ electrochemical gradient established by the Na+/K+ pump. In mice, the SLC5A1 gene, also known as SGLT1, primarily facilitates glucose transport and metabolism. The sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter (SGLT1) encoded by SLC5A1 is a key glucose transporter in the small intestine and kidney, responsible for glucose absorption in both organs. In the mouse intestine, SLC5A1 is highly expressed in the ileum and less so in the colon and jejunum. This expression pattern highlights SLC5A1's crucial role in glucose absorption in the ileum segment of the small intestine, underscoring its significance in the system of intestinal glucose absorption.
