Target Information
Protein S100-A6 may act as a calcium sensor and modulator, contributing to cellular calcium signaling. It is thought to function by interacting with other proteins, such as TPR-containing proteins, and indirectly influences various physiological processes like actin cytoskeleton reorganization and cell motility. S100-A6 binds two calcium ions in a cooperative manner. In mice, S100A6 is involved in numerous systems, including the nervous system, heart, liver, and cancer, playing a crucial role in the development and progression of diseases. S100A6 is widely expressed in the mouse brain, particularly in neurons and glial cells. Research indicates that S100A6 expression is linked to neurodegenerative diseases; for example, in Alzheimer's disease (AD) models, S100A6 expression in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus is significantly increased and is associated with the formation of β-amyloid plaques.
