Target Information

Reg2 is a protein found in pancreatic β cells that plays a crucial role in islet regeneration. Research has demonstrated that Reg2 is significantly upregulated in obesity-induced mouse models, being vital for islet expansion and regeneration. For instance, Reg2-deficient (Reg2−/−) mice display only 25% of the islet expansion capacity compared to wild-type mice when subjected to a high-fat diet. Moreover, overexpressing Reg2 enhances the increase in islet area, highlighting its positive contribution to islet regeneration. Under obesity or high-fat diet conditions, Reg2 expression significantly rises, possibly due to its involvement in islet regeneration. However, in certain cases, Reg2 expression may decrease over time, suggesting its specific role might vary across different pathological states. In diabetic mouse models, Reg2 overexpression enhances islet function. For example, in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice, overexpressing Reg2 substantially increased islet area and β-cell number, along with improving insulin secretion capacity.
