Target Information
The 43 kDa receptor-associated protein of the synapse, also known as the Receptor Associated Protein of The Synapse, is a postsynaptic protein essential for the clustering of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) at the neuromuscular junction. It may connect the receptor to the underlying postsynaptic cytoskeleton, potentially through direct interaction with actin or spectrin. Rapsyn supports the proper functioning of neuromuscular junctions in mice by binding to AChR and facilitating its aggregation. Additionally, it plays a role in the formation of synaptic scaffolds and may hold therapeutic potential for certain diseases. In the experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG) model, the overexpression of Rapsyn can protect AChR from damage, consequently enhancing muscle strength in mice.
