Target Information

Caspase-3 is a thiol protease that serves as a key effector caspase during the execution phase of apoptosis. Upon cleavage and activation by initiator caspases such as CASP8, CASP9, and/or CASP10, Caspase-3 facilitates apoptosis by catalyzing the cleavage of numerous proteins. In mice, Caspase-3 plays a crucial role in the execution stage of apoptosis across various cell types, including neurons, pancreatic β cells, retinal photoreceptors, skeletal muscle, and myocardium. During the development of the mouse cerebellum, Caspase-3 mediates the apoptosis of granule and Purkinje cells, often resulting from their failure to form proper synaptic connections. Additionally, in Alzheimer's disease models, Caspase-3 is implicated in the apoptosis of hippocampal neurons, a role that is closely tied to the disease's progression.
