Target Information
Histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) is a histone deacetylase that catalyzes the removal of acetyl groups from lysine residues on the N-terminal regions of core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). HDAC2 is integral to numerous biological processes in mice, including neural development, oocyte maturation, cardiac function, tumorigenesis, kidney protection, and skeletal muscle function. In the mouse brain, HDAC2 is particularly critical for neuronal development and synaptic plasticity. Research has demonstrated that overexpression of HDAC2 reduces the density of dendritic spines in the CA1 region of the hippocampus and dentate gyrus granule cells, whereas HDAC2 knockout enhances dendritic spine density, thereby improving synaptic plasticity.
