Target Information
Gremlin-1 is a cytokine that may play a significant role in carcinogenesis and metanephric kidney development. It acts as a BMP antagonist crucial for early limb outgrowth and patterning, particularly in maintaining the FGF4-SHH feedback loop. In mice, Gremlin-1 is involved in a wide array of physiological and pathological processes, from embryonic development to adulthood, by interacting with various signaling pathways such as BMP and VEGF. It plays a vital role in embryonic development, including dorsalization, the formation of the distal-proximal axis in lung development, kidney development, and limb growth. Notably, the complete deletion of the Gremlin-1 gene in mice results in embryonic lethality due to renal dysgenesis and lung fissure defects.
