Target Information

In the cytoplasm, Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase converts glucose-6-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate, marking the second step of glycolysis, and performs the reverse reaction during gluconeogenesis. Beyond its role as a glycolytic enzyme, it functions as a secreted cytokine and angiogenic factor (AMF) that stimulates endothelial cell motility. This dimeric enzyme catalyzes the interconversion between D-glucose-6-phosphate and D-fructose-6-phosphate, playing a crucial role in cellular metabolism, particularly in glycolysis. Deleting the GPI gene in mice results in embryonic lethality, as studies indicate that mouse embryos lacking GPI function are unable to develop normally, underscoring the enzyme's importance in organismal development.
