Target Information
Gap junction beta-2 protein is a key structural component of gap junctions, which are dodecameric channels linking the cytoplasm of adjacent cells. These junctions are created by the docking of two hexameric hemichannels, each originating from a different cell membrane. In mice, the GJB2 gene primarily facilitates the development and function of inner ear structures, particularly within the auditory system. Connexin 26 (Cx26), encoded by GJB2, is essential for forming gap junctions (GJCs) in non-sensory cochlear cells, such as supporting and hair cells. These gap junctions are crucial for potassium ion recycling, intercellular signaling, and mechanical and electrical conversion. Mice with a GJB2 gene knockout experience glucose transplacental transport disorders during the embryonic stage, resulting in embryonic death. Therefore, researchers often employ conditional knockout models to circumvent this issue.
