Target Information
Ferritin light chain 1 functions to store iron in a soluble, non-toxic, and readily available form, playing a crucial role in maintaining iron homeostasis. It captures iron in its ferrous form and deposits it as ferric hydroxides following oxidation. Additionally, it facilitates the delivery of iron to cells, particularly mediating iron uptake in the capsule cells of the developing kidney. FTL is essential for iron homeostasis, with its mutation or loss leading to disrupted iron metabolism and potentially inducing neurodegenerative diseases. Mouse models with FTL gene mutations, such as FTL-Tg mice, exhibit symptoms like brain iron accumulation, neuronal damage, and reduced motor ability. These symptoms are linked to oxidative stress caused by free radicals and protein aggregation, underscoring FTL's critical role in iron homeostasis and neuroprotection.
