Target Information
Neurofilaments typically consist of three intermediate filament proteins: NEFL, NEFM, and NEFH, which are essential for maintaining neuronal caliber. The neurofilament medium polypeptide, NEFM, may also interact with neuronal intermediate filament proteins like PRPH and INA to establish neuronal filamentous networks. In mice, NEFM plays multiple crucial roles, including in the development of the nervous system, metabolic maintenance, mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, and regulation of immune responses. In the context of neurodegenerative diseases, NEFM's function is notably impacted. For instance, in Alzheimer's disease (AD) models, NEFM expression levels are reduced and are linked to amyloid pathology in the brain. Additionally, the absence or reduction of NEFM can cause axonal transport disorders, further exacerbating neuronal degeneration.
