Target Information
Calpain-10 is a calcium-dependent thiol protease that operates outside of lysosomes, facilitating the selective breakdown of proteins involved in cytoskeletal changes and signal transduction. It might contribute to glucose uptake prompted by insulin. In mice, CAPN10 is associated with insulin secretion, glucose metabolism, cytoskeletal reorganization, obesity control, and type 2 diabetes susceptibility. It is a key element of the obesity-related quantitative trait locus (QTL) Adip1. Research indicates that genetic variations in CAPN10 are strongly linked to mouse body weight, fat tissue mass, and serum leptin levels. Mice lacking the CAPN10 gene exhibit increased body weight and higher serum leptin concentrations, suggesting CAPN10's crucial role in energy balance and fat metabolism regulation.
