Target Information
The relaxin family of peptide hormones is part of the insulin superfamily, comprising seven peptides with high structural similarity but low sequence similarity. In females, relaxin is produced by the corpus luteum of the ovary, the breast, and during pregnancy, by the placenta, chorion, and decidua. In cats, relaxin is a pregnancy-specific hormone generated by the placenta. Both serum and urinary relaxin levels can be utilized to diagnose and monitor pregnancy in cats. Although the main function of relaxin is to regulate pregnancy, some studies have shown that it may also have a role in the non-reproductive system.
