Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a type III intermediate filament protein that is expressed by numerous cell types of the central nervous system, including astrocytes and ependymal cells during development. It is expressed by various cell types in the central nervous system (CNS), including astrocytes and ependymal cells during development. Elevated levels of GFAP in the blood or cerebrospinal fluid can indicate CNS damage or disease.
