Target Information

Vancomycin is a powerful glycopeptide antibiotic considered a "last resort" treatment for serious infections in humans, especially those caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterococcus faecium. While vancomycin itself is not approved for use in food-producing animals, a similar antibiotic called avoparcin was once used as a growth promoter. The widespread use of avoparcin in livestock led to the development of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in farm animals. The concern is that these resistant bacteria can be transferred to humans through the food chain, contributing to the global issue of antimicrobial resistance and rendering vancomycin ineffective for treating human infections.
