Rhodamine B is a synthetic dye used as a colorant in textiles, leather, and paper products. It is not approved for use as a food additive in any country. The food safety concern arises from its illegal use to artificially enhance the color of certain animal source foods, such as chili powders, shrimp, and certain meat products. This is done to make the food appear fresher or of higher quality. Rhodamine B is considered a carcinogen, meaning it can cause cancer. Its presence in food is a serious public health risk and a significant food safety violation.
