Albendazole is a widely used broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug to treat and prevent parasitic infections in livestock, including cattle, sheep, and pigs. Albendazole sulfoxide is the primary active metabolite of albendazole in these animals. When animals are treated with albendazole, residues of the drug and its metabolites, including albendazole sulfoxide, can remain in their tissues and milk. If these products are consumed by humans before the established withdrawal period has passed, it can pose a food safety risk.
