Target Information
Mouse Myelin Basic Protein (Mbp) is a key structural component of myelin in the central nervous system (CNS), primarily synthesized by oligodendrocytes. Mbp plays a crucial role in the compaction and stabilization of myelin sheaths, which are essential for efficient nerve impulse conduction and axonal support. It interacts with negatively charged phospholipids in the myelin membrane and acts as a molecular sieve to regulate the protein-to-lipid ratio, ensuring the formation of a lipid-rich insulating myelin membrane. Mbp also influences cytoskeletal protein organization and is involved in signaling pathways, such as binding to Fyn kinase, which is important for oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination. In addition to its structural functions, Mbp has been implicated in various neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis and leukodystrophies, where its deficiency or dysfunction leads to impaired myelination and neurological deficits. In mouse models, Mbp deficiency results in severe hypomyelination, characterized by shivering symptoms and premature death. Furthermore, Mbp has been studied in the context of neuroprotection, where its expression levels can reflect the severity of CNS damage and its restoration can aid in functional recovery after injuries like cerebral ischemia.
