Target Information
Monkeypox Virus (MPXV) is a large, enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus Orthopoxvirus within the Poxviridae family. It is a zoonotic pathogen responsible for mpox (formerly monkeypox), an emerging public health disease characterized by painful vesicular rashes, fever, and lymphadenopathy. MPXV replicates within the host cell cytoplasm and exists in two infectious forms: intracellular mature virions (IMVs) and extracellular enveloped virions (EEVs). Key targets for serological diagnostics, therapeutics (like tecovirimat), and vaccine development include major surface antigens such as A27L and L1R (associated with the mature virion) and A33R and B5R (associated with the enveloped virion), which mediate host cell binding, entry, and extracellular dissemination.
