Target Information

Diphtheria toxin is an extremely potent exotoxin secreted by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and occasionally by Corynebacterium ulcerans. In veterinary medicine and food safety, C. ulcerans can infect livestock, particularly dairy cows, causing mastitis. The toxin can then be shed directly into raw milk. Diphtheria toxin inhibits eukaryotic protein synthesis by catalyzing the ADP-ribosylation of elongation factor 2 (EF-2), leading to cellular death. Ingestion of unpasteurized milk contaminated with this toxin or the toxigenic bacteria poses a severe public health risk, potentially causing diphtheria-like symptoms, upper respiratory tract lesions, and systemic complications like myocarditis or polyneuritis in humans.
