Target Information

Xylazine is a potent alpha2-adrenergic receptor agonist widely used in veterinary medicine as a sedative, analgesic, and muscle relaxant for large animals like cattle, horses, and deer. Its connection to animal-derived food safety centers on the risk of veterinary drug residues in meat and milk if withdrawal periods are poorly managed before slaughter or milking. Because it is strictly unauthorized for human use and can induce severe central nervous system depression, respiratory difficulties, and cardiovascular complications in humans, food safety authorities mandate rigorous surveillance and zero or extremely low maximum residue limits for xylazine in animal products to ensure consumer protection.
