Target Information

Cystatin C is a small protein produced at a constant rate by virtually all nucleated cells. It is freely filtered by the glomeruli in the kidney and then reabsorbed and degraded by renal tubules. Due to its constant production and clearance, its serum concentration is directly related to the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This makes it a potential biomarker for early kidney dysfunction, as its levels may rise before traditional markers like creatinine, although its reliability as a sole marker in cats has been a subject of ongoing research.
